I'm wanting to build a 393 or 408 stroker I have a 91 ssp coupe is there a year range for the block I shouldn't go past I.e. 1980 or older or does it matter
Thanks guys
Any W block is good but that is an open ended question . The later F4TE roller blocks are the roller blocks and the older blocks you can use link bar lifters to go roller . The C9 and D0 blocks are 9.48 deck hight so they are .02 shorter then the later blocks so keep that in mind while ordering parts . The only other thing is the 1 or 2 pc rear main . You will need to know what block the crank is for . The 2 pc main crank has a ridge that can be machined off but it's better to know ahead of time what to get . The crank for the 1 pc can be used in either block .

The F4TE block is nice for the 1 piece rear main seal and the ability to use a SBF hydraulic roller camshaft with OEM roller lifters. 650hp is about the range for the block.
The older 69-70 model era blocks are suppose to be a little stronger and good to use if doing a flat tappet or solid roller camshaft build. I used one in my 410W build and hard blocked it to the water pump holes. No issues what so ever with.
I had a B1 I think Sportsman block, it was brand new at the time from FMPP, not an old take out... It held over 700 rw for 20k miles, and never broke, even though it had some piston damage from a bad tune up early in it's life.
I have a W block now which is a siamese bore 4 bolt splade similar to a R302 block. Its good for probably more power than you will ever make 2000hp<
Never had a F4TE fail in pumpkin head. It made around 900-1000 and made 150 passes the first season without any problems. Still think with a different turbo it could have went 5.2's at 130+.
