  • welding on brake pads?

I have some brake pads for my side by side that have a hole which is much too large for the post it slides on.. i'm wondering if it's feasible to have someone weld the holes up so that I can redrill them closer to spec. whats the chance that i can get this done without warping them?

Run a file accross the metal part of the pad and see if it's hard. A file will cut into soft steel and "bounce" over hardend steel. If it is hard I wouldn'd weld on it because of a crack starting.

If its soft weld it up, tig would be the best, but wire feed would work. Just give it some time to cool. I wouldn't worry to much about warping as much as drilling through the weld. Grind it flat first.

Kinda of the same issue with an older kart. Pins vs cheap pads. Read less expensive. I have welded them up to get rid of mushie feeling brakes.

      just my 2 cents.

Thanks, I'll pull wheels tonight and use the parking brake pads as a test.

            it's a 1100lb gokart.. brakes are needed!

a friend suggested since i have 2 contact points already that i would be better served adding a dimple of a weld (like a tack) then file it down to give the appropriate contact.. i feel like this will be much easier than trying to drill through the weld.

              brake back plate

I'm fairly sure their mild steel. use any mild steel rod/wire and you should be able to drill it fine. anything close is good
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
