  • rear brakes super grabby

My F150 has drums in the rear and ive noticed them being extremely grabby. If I leave work in the mornng to go home, I have to feather the brake pedal so I dont skid. They will straight up lock up and skid. About a month ago I checked out the shoes. They had a lot of life left. Appeared fairly new. Does have a slight screech in the first few brakings after start up but goes away. It does seem to lessen the grabbyness after a few miles. Ideas?

They're out of adjustment along with the humid weather causing corrosion (rust) to build up on the drums. This is why they are grabby for the first few stops. Get them adjusted up and it should stop the grabbing for a while till you figure out why they aren't self adjusting any more.

Don't let all the little springs and stuff scare you. There really is nothing to them.

I'm not real familiar with drums on a 97 f-150, try and pull the drums and find the adjuster at the bottom in between the shoes. Adjust (should only turn in one direction) them outwards and slide the drum back on and see if the shoes drag ever so slightly on the drum on the way back on. If they don't, adjust them out some more till the do. The adjusters are good about having a build up of brake dust and such, thus stoping them from working properly.

Take a picture with your phone before you pull them apart.

I usually do them one side at a time so i have a reference, and lay the parts out in the order removed. This makes reassembly much easier

It came from the factory with automatic adjusters, you should be able to adjust them up by using the brakes in reverse. If they don't, you'll need a brake spoon to adjust them up. You don't need to pull the drum off, just jack up the rear and put the transmission in neutral.
