  • Leak down test on cold engine...

I got some pretty poor readings... I can't warm it up cause it's not in a car. Here is what I got :

    1. 55%
    2. 60%
    3. 40%
    4. 40%
    5. 60%
    6. 40%
    7. Didn't test
    8. Didn't test

Is this normal for a cold engine?

New motor? Are valves adjusted? What's the story

I have to ask the obvious, but is the engine on TDC? (or at the very least in a position with the valves closed?)

A cold engine can have a BIG amount of leak down for many reasons, the obvious being nothing in the engine is 'seated'. Even the valves can seal much better when they're hot - especially the exhaust side.

Newer motor that has set for awhile, wasn't outside or anything just in the garage. Wanting to swap it out with the 1 in my car now, just want to make sure there are no issues before I pull it because I know mine is getting tired.

Yes, I am positive that I was at TDC. Is there any alternative to insure that a cold engine is in good shape before you drop it into a car? Sucks not being able to bring it up 2 operating temperature to do this test.

where did you hear the air coming from, exhaust, intake, or crankcase?

I'll retest tonight and pin point where its coming from. I honestly didn't take note of it, I was too depressed at the results!

Ok so cylinder #1 its showing 50% and I hear it coming out of the crankcase and somewhere around the cylinder head. Im 95% sure its coming out of the holes in the lower corner of it. Pic attached. Nothing out of the intake or exhaust. Same for #2.

i always leak engines cold, if i see more than 8% i'm concerned on the bike engine stuff.

that's the oil return, if air is coming out of there it's going by the rings, has this engine run enough since rebuilt to seat the rings?

No idea. I inherited it. Just know it has very low miles.

Iv always got crazy leak down numbers on cold engines. Squirt some oil into the cylinder and do it again then try a compression test.

I'll give it a shot and post the results. Thanks for the help so far guys!

Yes, oil the cyl walls and rings.

Compression test(rolling the starter) should be done along with a leakdown test.
It may help isolate where the issue could be coming from.
