  • Play in steering wheel...

It's not the rag joint, it'd been replaced with the MM steering shaft. I've pulled the column cover off, and have figured out 2 things:

There is a pin that seems to have some play in it, but the pin does not appear accessible. Kinda curious if it can be spot welded to keep it still....

Also, the bold holding the steering wheel on has play in it, but if I tighten it up, the wheel won't turn... its a GT Grant wheel btw.

Any ideas? I'm tired of this sloppy ass steering wheel.

Tilt wheel? Those are known to wear out. The grant wheel hub can develope play too.
Pull the covers off and try tightening the bolts that hold the tilt system together. I used a small piece
of razor blade steel as a spacer to take up the slack between hub and steering shaft. Now his car has zero play.

Yes it's tilt. I tightened those bolts up already. One was loose. I don't fully understand how the thing goes together, so that is probably part of the problem. All I know, is the parts that have play - I can't seem to get to them.

What does one do if the tilt column is worn out? Is there a reman? rebuild kit? aftermarket?

My coupe had that problem. I just found a column that didn't have any play and swapped it.

Never pulled a column. Difficult? Any other vehicles interchangeable?

You have a clearance problem. That bolt should be tight. Might need to look into a different hub or see where it is making contact. Maybe you can shave it down..

I've had a bad rack cause play in the steering also. You can have someone wiggle the wheel from inside while you watch where the shaft connects to the rack and also watch the tie rods to get an idea where the play is coming in.

When I first got my mustang it had an aftermarket Grant steering wheel on it that wobbled around like crazy. So I tried taking it all apart, and tightening the main center nut, and it would tighten up, but the steering wheel would then also not turn either.

So I got tired of messing with it, and broke down, and bought a Grant steering wheel installation kit for my mustang, and that solved my problem.

Come to find out whoever put the aftermarket Grant steering wheel on my mustang didnt use the correct installation kit when installing it. They probably just took that steering wheel off some other make/model vehicle, and just used all the install stuff that came off of it, and put it on my mustang which wasnt the correct one for it...

That, and when you install the aftermarket steering wheel kit, there are 2-3 lil spacer rings that go inside, and you gotta make sure to grease them up with the grease the comes in the kit. The grease helps the steering wheel turn easily. If there is no grease between them its like turning metal against metal, which isnt going to turn...
