  • Exhaust for my Grand Wagoneer- size and routing?

    Long shot from a stang but figured I would ask.

    I just picked up a beach cruiser...but she came with open headers.
    Headers are full length with 3" ball/socket flanges.

    The engine is a stock internal AMC 5.9 with an edelbrock performer intake and 600 carb, so nothing crazy.

    I'm required to have a catalytic converter, and would prefer just one for cost reasons...so I'm thinking I will bring the drivers side pipe over to the passenger side, into a Y pipe, and then single pipe into a cat and a single in/single out muffler.

    My main question is what size would be best on this engine? Most use will be lower RPM on the beach with occasional around rown driving.

    2.5 inch will plenty

      Any benefit to going duals all the way out?

      I'm thinking 3"-2.5" reducer from headers, 2.5" pipe into a Y, 3" single out from the Y into cat and muffler.

        If the headers are already 3", no point in going back down to 2.5"(for cat-back), I'd just run the 3" like you said, down to 2.5"(if you need to for Y-pipe fitment) over to a 3" Y, and 3" Cat and all the way out with a decent little muffler. 14" or 18" Magnaflow muffler would sound good on it.

          Here's some crude pics. Don't mind the trans lines and wires...had everything loose to seal oil pan and rear main. Now I need to wipe the residual oil from the old leaks.

          You can see how tight the bend will need to be on the drivers side to make a 90º towards the passenger side before it gets to the trans x-member.

          I can also drop lower and go under the frame rails down each side of the jeep with true duals.. but won't have any crossover or H pipe.









          On a mild performance vehicle like this, would buying and cutting several mandrel bends be worth the benefit or should I just use a cheap local exhaust shop and let them bend it?

            Very cool toy.

            I would just let the muffler man run what he can. I doubt any gain would be had with mandrels at low rpm stuff, and you might see more low end torque with the "crush" bends.

                2.5" will help the torque on a combo like that
