Socket Organization - Portable Tool Chest

I hit up Sears yesterday for a good deal on some tools. 309 piece with ratcheting wrenches for 200 bucks.

I picked up this portable storage box, as my roommate has one and I really like it.

Anyways, the 309 piece kit came with a ton of sockets, 201 to be exact. I'd like to keep everything in this portable box, but right now everything is thrown into compartments. 1/2 on one side and 3/8 and 1/4 on the other.

I do not really want to drill into the portable box to mount anything.

I've seen these type of metal rail organizers, but have read they are not that great. Do you have experience with them? Do they suck?



Are the plastic ball bearing types better? Will these hold up to 1/2" deep sockets?

I stumbled on some flexible urethane socket rails. Do you have experience with them? From what I read it's a pain to get the sockets on and off, especially the 1/4s.

Do the magnets hold quite well? Pretty much they would all be placed in the bottom larger storage area of my chest. Those bad boys are pricey. I'd be around $200 bucks in those to organize all the sockets.

Those seem more like something to bolt down to a drawer vs just toss in a larger storage area.

I use what the snap on man gives me, and when those wear out i get these from sears or whoever has them.

also if your handy take some 1/4-1/2 ply and drill holes and cut dowl rod down and make your own.

It appears on that type of organizer that the socket just freely drops onto the rod or am I wrong and they snap in? If it just drops in it wouldn't be good for my situation.

Those just drop on. They are about the best for a stationary box

yeah, they have to get pretty high to fall out, so if you are looking to put them in something, drawers that are just tall enough work great, but tossing them into a big open box wouldnt be cool.

I used the metal ones years ago and the metal would bend and sockets would fall off. Been using a plastic variation for about 4 years now without any problems with low-moderate usage.

Ones you can purchase from Sears. Tried to fond them, with no luck. They are cheap, but work. I just hate running to the toolbox all the time, so I just grab those rails and go.
