  • Just toasted the trans in my 2000 Z71...rebuild or replace?

Noticed yesterday it was making some noise then last night after work it was slipping getting on the highway. Then this morning coming back from running around it clanked really loud and just quit altogether. Luckily it was close to the house so my son and I could walk home LOL

So now basically I'm looking at trying to either replace or rebuild this thing. I'm thinking the quickest solution is to run down to a junk yard and pick one up, but I don't know how long that trans will last.

Rebuilds I've seen guys on here and on craigslist estimating between $400 and $1000 for the rebuild, then I'm stuck trying to pull this trans out, take it to them, wait for the rebuild, then go pick it back up.

And anyone have any advice on R&R'ing this trans? How bad of a job is it? Last trans swap I did was on my '96 Cobra with a T45 and BBK longtubes. Is there anything that would make this a bigger job than I'm expecting it to be?

id probably do an upgraded rebuild with some kind of warranty. Expecially if you go off road or tow. 4L60E isnt a transmission known for its strength.

Just get a reman. Sounds like with what is happening, the insides exploded and its not coming apart for rebuild. So you will end up paying someone to take it apart to say he can't fix it.

Call jasper. They have a good warranty on there's.

This. And get someone to do the labor, its not hard, but time consuming as you well know, Marcus.

Also I searched through here and found some numbers posted by Buzzo, greenbullitt, Crash, and Jyro recommending guys. If anyone else has someone they might know feel free to post up

You need an ls 4l80, wiring pigtail, extend the cooler lines, 6.0 flexplate, some hardware, tuning and a crossmember. There are many swap threads on ls1tech and performancetrucks. I was going to do it and try to keep it under $2k for my turbo silverado build.

Mikes Trick shift quoted me very nice price on my boys Lightning and that included, tow, labor and warranty and it had nice(er) parts than stock. This is what I would do instead of fucking around with used transmissions from EL Kayy Que or a pick and pull. I have seen many guys on their back a few times with shit from a junkyard or recycler.

Shit man, that's gonna be a ton more time and cash than I plan on spending. I'm hoping to get it done by this weekend if I can and all those extra parts are gonna be over and above what I plan on spending. I just need to get back on the road. No need to have a bad ass trans just to drive to work and back

I would trust someone like Mike's before Eagle or AAmco or some other shit company. If you take it out and take it to them, it shouldn't be too bad, Marcus.
