shifter won't click into third D(not second) when I try manual-forward shifting c4.

    one thing

check your vacuum line to the tranny

make sure the shifter is set correctly on the arm

they usually don't move from sitting, but, put it in drive, take the cable loose at the arm on the tranny and make sure the tranny's in drive at the same time the shifter is. The pin on the cable at the arm should slip right in when it's right.

The other setting that keeps it in second is the kickdown linkage, take it loose at the carb and see if it shifts into high. I don't know if you have a cable or rod for the kickdown, make sure it moves either way.

when you stated this,"shifter won't click into third D(not second) when I try manual-forward shifting c4.
          Of course was fine before"
it confuses me. High on your shifter is drive unless it's a manual valve body. if the shifter won't go into 3rd, lube up the mechanism under the cover. lps or anykind of light spray grease/oil
