  • Engine code P455

On my 97 F150 4.6. This code says gross evap leak/no flow. We hooked up a smoke tester to the evap service port and smoked the system. It only leaked smoke at the gas tank vent... Everything looks good. Truck runs fine, just has this code that comes back after clearing it. Ideas/help are appreciated.

There should be a sensor that controls that flow and it always breaks. Two vacuum ports, should be right up by the throttle body on the drivers side of the engine IIRC.

Have you tried setting it on fire?

This is the little fucker that you are looking for. Almost always the cause for that code.

I went ahead and bought it along with a new fuel cap. Now to see if the check engine light will go off... Hopefully... My next step is the Fuel tank pressure switch.

Here's a question for u JC. When we were smoking the system, the evap system never revealed a gross leak like the code states. Only the tank vent seeped a little. I did notice that the VMV has smoke oozing from its circular edges.

How long will it take for the computer to reset its codes and dump the check engine light? If of course the problem is fixed.

It's usually something like 50 driving cycles to clear the code. It's much easier to clear it with a reader, or by disconnecting the battery for a few minutes. Once it's clear, it will be back within 50 miles or so if it didn't fix it.

Good lord IDK what cycle im on. But no where near 50 i bet. Still on. I assume Ill be replacing the fuel pressure switch i guess.

Side note, will a EVAP leak/gross leak cause gas mileage to take a crap?
