  • What's the order of prefered 302 heads?

Been away from 302's a long time, the 351W heads were the things to run in the old days, how do they hold up now, like against GT40? Just wondering, a guy at work is hoarding sets of early 289 heads, 351W heads, and thinks they are the shit! Are un-ported GT40's better, or better ported? I always hear people wanting them. Of course, don't put the aluminum heads in the line up at this time. I figure the low life mid 70's are the least desired.

Not sure how different the are but I'll have some 69 351 heads for sale here in the next month or so! 3 angle valve job and slightly ported!

The early 289/302 heads are ok but the best part is if they have the small chambers to bump your compression . Other then that they are no better then the later e5/e7 heads . You have to watch the casting #'s because just being early does not give them the best small chamber . Any of the heads are way to small for any performance on anything bigger then a 302 . The early 351 heads had bigger valves (same as gt40's) and this is why the early sb guys wanted them . There down fall is bigger chambers but the hp 351's had flat top pistons to make up the compression . If you use them on a 302 they will work just like a gt40 . Again these heads will work ok on a 351 and can work well with a good port job for medium performance but they are to small for anything larger than a 351 . The gt40 vs gt40p is a close match but the exhaust valve on the p is a little smaller but the port is better and can flow better and make a little more power . Overall if you use any of these heads you will need to adress the rocker setup as they have press in studs (sum adjustable some not) on the early heads and pedistol mounts on the 40's . If you pay for porting and stud install and parts , new springs and new hardened exhaust seats (early heads ran leaded fuel) then you end up spending enough to buy used alum heads and its just not worth it . If you port them and do the rest they work good but don't be looking for 500 hp . Hope this helps .

If you're talking production iron heads (for some weird reason), I'd take a set of 69 351W heads (C9). For aftermarket Iron heads, I'm a fan of the good 'ol Hi Ports.

I know Rustang enough to know that he's not spending that kind of money on heads, and I'd also guess the enquiry is for his maverick -

Duane, if it were me - I'd be looking at the GT40's (not P's). You'll get the ability to run pedastal mount rockers, hardened seats (or at least compatible with unleaded gas), and overall more plentiful in the event you'd have to replace them.

You are so right! It has E7's on it (not GT40's, I found out there is a difference) But the main reason I asked, is the guy at work is living in the 70's, always using old magazine articles as reference, and still thinks wasting money on old worn out heads is the way to go. One day I will put GT40 heads on the Maverick, it's just a slow cruiser for now. As long as it runs consistent (bracket car) I don't care. It's the 460 in the Mustang that gets the better stuff. Dumpycapri pretty much summed it up for me! Thanks guys!
