  • What's up with my Ranger?

My 2001, 2.5- 8 plug Ranger feels like it's missing. On acceleration it misses, lots of throttle at low RPM is the worst, although it misses occasionally at cruise. It never happens on deceleration. You sometimes hear it pop back through the air cleaner. It's not speed sensative, but throttle angle is the key.

No CEL or codes. It got new plugs & wires about 40K miles ago, last fuel filter was about 30K miles ago, it's got 155K miles total.

    What's up?

That's possible, although it's been acting up since November - I only drive it once or twice a week. It seems a little better on dry days, but the miss never goes away.

Ignition is failing somewhere. Check all the wires, check the plugs, check the coils. Does that thing use the 4 post wastespark coils?

Check your fuel pressure, my pump began to fail around the same time yours is at.

Was doing that to me a while back and ended up being the coil pack.

The throttle angle makes me say TPS, everything else screams ignition.

I ordered a pair of the $27 coil packs on Rock Auto.com. So we'll see if that fixes it

Not the same problem, mine idles fine, and only misses under load (in gear)

Mine idles ok now. Still sounds like its missing and popping through the intake though

I'm not saying the coil isn't the problem, because I've seen that numerous times, might wanna check to see if the timing belt hasn't jumped a tooth. I've seen that as well.
