  • 2008+ dodge diesel guru's...need info on 6.7L

so school me on the 6.7's and the 2008+ pro's and cons for the 3500 trucks.

I know all I need to know on the 2004 to 2007 but got lost after they went to the 6.7L and then the new 6spd auto and then the G56 over the NV6500.

I am looking for a tow vehicle for a 30' stacker trailer and need the 3500...am considering a manual but most likely will get an auto for convenience....I just like rowing gears!

I miss my 04.5 2500 4x4 but it would not be up to this task and no, a Ford or Cheby is not on the list. I already drove a 2012 4x4 and liked it, but don't like the price. I do see they keep the torque rating pretty low on the manuals but is it because the trans is weak or does the clutch slip like my 04.5 did with a programmer?

    Gracias.

    Con: Dodge.

Here's the other thing, they are truly unreliable - not the engine per se, but all of the horseshit EPA required garbage. This also will kill mileage.

Pro's, the auto tranny is great - I would never buy a 6.7 manual, hell I don't know if I would buy a dodge manual again short of a 12v with a 5 speed.

If I were buying a newer one and had my pick, I'd get a Ford. The truck is lightyears ahead of the Dodge and the new cummins isn't what the old one was.

      I've drive both the 5.9 and 6.7, I like the 6.7 better.

In what capacity though? I'm not saying it doesn't run better than a stock 5.9, but long term? You'll end up spending a bunch of $ before getting to the point of bypassing everything and hoping you don't get caught.

Yak, Ive never heard anyone say that before. The lockup strategy is shit and the line pressure can only be tweaked to an extent due to the pcm turning it down no matter how you raise it. OD software from h/s helps alot with a modded vb, but youre still stuck with the dpf shit unless you sacrifice your first born for an NOS minimaxx

Let me clarify - it is stout, my dad has 190k on his with no issues. I do agree that the shifting sucks assholes, you CANNOT lug these trucks.

He has a smarty and resistors plugged everywhere to bypass everything.

I'd take a 07 5.9 with the 6spd manual any day over the 6.7, they say the 6.7 can be reliable if all the emmisions crap is pulled.

Ok, I don't live in a county that has emissions...just have the warranty to deal with and for the first 100k miles...dodge owns fixing it. My question is will it strand me somewhere 1000 miles from home while towing 16,000 lbs?

If so, I am going back to what I know which is an 04-07 with a 6spd, a southbend clutch and a programmer...maybe a turbo upgrade so the EGT's aren't spiking all the time with the programmer.

That and I won't be putting out $40-44k right now for the ST model and might find a more equipped model with 80-100k miles for $25ish? On to ebay and Autotrader! LOL!

so after some reading, is it true that if I drive it like an old woman, the emissions stuff screws me? If I drive it like I stole it, I am ok?

It cleans out the carbon buildup in the EGR system (specifically the valve). Don't rape it though.

It can still happen though, so just get rid of it after the warranty is up.

Offer this fool 10k, pick up a used auto tranny (found rebuilt 4x4 ones for $1200), and drop it in: http://dallas.craigslist.org/dal/cto/3598430771.html

How are people deleting DPF now, software wise?

All the newer tuners say they don't allow for it.

I have NOS Mini Maxxes, but I also have a work around for the new street Minis.
Nothing cheap though. H&S made sure of that. If anybody thinks poor old H&S got beat up by the EPA, they've got a bridge to sell you!

This was about what I saw when I was thinking about trading up for a new D2500, and was even thinking about an F250sd.

Decided to dump a few grand into my dodge and keep it until we cant buy diesel anymore.
