The wife is driving my 06 crew cab Silverado and it came up charging system failure. She took it to one of the parts stores and they told her it was the battery. She had it replaced tonight and it still has the error message. Is there an easy way to check the alternator? Without pulling it off? I'm still TDY in El Paso so no way for me to get a crack at it. Anything else I should have her look for?

What's the volt gauge reading while running?

Most parts stores should be able to test the alternator while on the vehicle.

She said the gauge jumps around between 9 and 14, and usually settles down and the error message will go off.

Kinda what I figured, at least it's easy to get to. Hopefully it'll live till I get a chance to run home this weekend.

Have her hold a kitchen knife by the alternator. If the knife is attracted to the alt (magnet) its good. If not, it's a bad alt

Is it a 1 wire alternator?
If so the exciter wire may have bad connection.
I had an issue before to where at WOT throttle you could see a voltage drop and the lights would dim out a little bit.
Fixed the exciter wire,no more issues.
