I had the same over heating issues and burping coolant, pulled head and found a cracked head. This is a 2.3L head. But you issue is the heads or gaskets no doubt.

Brooks figured out the problem.
Well, I took my car to Brooks to get tuned after putting the heads back on. After he got it running it was still overheating. After some investigation he found the number eight cylinder of the block is cracked.
Thanks for figuring this out Brooks. Not the answer I wanted, but it has been driving me crazy for close to a year.

No problem Robert, I wish it had a better ending to the story - but sometimes it just doesn't work out for us.
I can't remember if I told you or not, but the head on that cylinder was watertight on both the intake and exhaust valves - and the head gasket was stuck like chuck. It had ZERO compression on that cylinder - but oddly enough it passed a block test. (chemical check for Carbon monoxide in the cooling system).
It's a VERY small crack and pretty tough to spot.
