Mike, you are going blind and you are confused. You keep saying 'blown' when in fact it's 'leaking'. Blown would imply that you have a piece missing from the gasket. A leaking headgasket (especially on this) will look like a black stain. You will chase your tail trying to find out why it's not running right, running hot, misfiring, melting plugs etc.
THIS picture explains it all. You don't have to have any special tools to see this thing is leaking BAD at either side of 12 o'clock. This is VERY common on SBF - especially one with a ton of miles and stock headbolts.

Use a razor blade to get most of the junk off the block surface, then take a 2x4 about 10 inches long with a piece of 400 grit sand paper and use that to do your final cleaning of the block surface. It will ensure you get a nice even load on the surface and not dig in and leave low spots. Then use brake cleaner to clean the surfaces off before assembly.
Doing this will also show any low or high spots you may have.
What bolts are you using for the new heads? Arp i hope?
