Guys, I know the best bet would be to spend the extra few hundred and do a basic rebuild. I'm opting out of this for a few reasons, it ran damn good so I feel like it will be okay. The time is limited and of course with anything its on borrowed time.

I plan on getting this going and being happy with it for a while, while keeping an eye out for something stronger, like a mexican block or a dart if the funds allow.

Could I use ATF and a rag to break up the carbon? Im going to rotate the cylinders to the top each time to prevent any debris and clean everything thoroughly.

    Stupid, yes. Dumb? Eh..

If you weren't putting the bottle to it I'd think you're safe just putting heads on it too, but you're a jug whore and it's going to go boom at that age.

I am a jug whore. But I don't plan on spraying it right away, going to have to learn the car again.

No sense in spraying something you can't drive yet.

Just cause its old doesn't mean it's going to blow up. My 85 gt has aftermarket heads on the original short block. I wouldn't hesitate to put a power adder on it.

Keep it simple. If you're not gonna put good parts in it, don't bother having the normal machine shop stuff done (boring, torque plate hone, line hone, turned crank, good rod bolts and resized rods, etc).

Pull it all apart, clean the pistons, get the carbon out of the ring lands. Check the crank for any grooves and lightly polish it up with crocus cloth. Since you say they're in good shape, berry hone the cylinder bores. Put a good set of file-fit rings in it and check all the end gaps closely since you're gonna spray the shit out of it. Put new bearings in it and make certain all the tolerances are in spec. If you find anything that is out of tolerance, STOP, there is a problem and you may need new parts. Keep it all clean, clean, CLEAN... really fucking clean. Unbelievably clean. Use moly on the bearings. Get a new standard oil pump, don't bother with any of that high pressure/volume shit. Get a hardened oil pump pushrod. Use Fel-Pro gaskets.

Take your time and enjoy the process. You can do this in a weekend if you don't fuck off too much.

You do need a few tools to do all of that ^. Buy yourself a magnetic base dial indicator, a good feeler gauge, some plasti-gauge, and I bet you can rent a torque wrench, ring compressor, and piston hammer. I'm sure there are some tools I'm forgetting. There always are.

Screw all the "rebuild it" talk, it just a 302. Its not worth rebuilding, if you make any type of serious power with it, it will just split. Run it and when its trash replace it with a 351W based motor.

Nah, It's good to 20#'s as long as I shift under 5000 RPM. That's the plan. Ha ha ha! Keep the timing at bay and the fuel a plenty!

Appreciate it, but I'm hoping not to need it.

Just finished cleaning every thing, 10 times. Took the cam out and cleaned everything again.

Getting ready to start putting it together tomorrow or the next day.
