A lean or rich code without any other symptoms besides a check engine light or without codes that might help support it always have a broad spectrum potential causes. Most of which seem to be much cheaper than the parts house "technician" recommends you buy. My best friend sells parts locally (for about a year now) and is my go to guy when I order. He's been around the shop side of it with me long enough to know better than to recommend a part based on a trouble code. He makes sure his customer understands he is a parts salesman not a repairman, and that the print out he gives list potential causes and repairs not recommended parts and repairs.

This. I use an old milk crate to hold the bed up....just the right size to wedge between the bed and frame rail.

The original code was for a circuit on the fuel pump. I replaced the fuel pump relay and the light went off for a while but the truck was still struggling at freeway speeds at time. Then it left me stranded when it wouldn't start. So I replaced the pump last night and the service engine soon light came back on. Now its a repeating code for misfire on cylinders 2 and 4. I replaced the spark plugs and started it up again and its still running like crap and the light is still on.

edit: forgot to add that I replaced the pcv valve as well

I checked the coil pack and the terminal for one of the misfiring cylinders appeared to be burned up. Thankfully, that is a lifetime warrantied part so I'll replace that and see what it does. I checked the vacuum lines and all looks well so far.

Now I'm stumped. This is the list of what's been replaced:

Spark plugs, spark plug wires, ignition coil, pcv valve, fuel pump relay, fuel filter and fuel pump assembly. Truck still runs crappy while in gear at a stop. Any guesses now?
