  • What is this Noise

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FqXko7NZEXQ Fixed listen and see if you can hear it.

This is the ticking noise my truck is making and its irritating the shit out of me!! I just got my spark plugs changed and coils. I was underneath my truck today listening to my engine and the ticking sound is coming from the back part of the motor on the drivers side. It ticks, up until I get the rpm's up enough then it stops. every now and then I smell fuel through the air vent 5.4 2004 f150 supercrew

Well, mechanic says there is no explanation for the noise as ford put out a tsb for it saying that the noises just occur and their is no reason for it. just noisy motors.

Cam phasers, lifters, and rockers are notorious for being noisy, sometimes louder than others. I had trouble making out the noise in the video. The cam phasers can last a long time making noise, some noise is normal. They can completely fail causing timing chain and or valve/piston damage(this is rare). If it is a rocker arm or lifter i would have it addressed pretty quickly, it doesnt take long for them to damage a camshaft.

Check this ^. As I posted earlier, my 2v was doing the same thing.

Well, yesterday I was turning into the parking lot at work when it sounded like my damn exhaust got ripped off or something. I coasted into the lot, then popped the hood with it still running. I could clearly hear that the noise (it was extremely loud at this point) was coming from my #3 coil, so I put my hand on it and I could feel it raise every time it fired.

I took unbolted the coil and when I pulled it out the plug came out with it. I feared stripped threads in the head, but they looked fine so I put it back in, a little tighter this time. I guess it just backed out. I've had no problems since then and it doesn't even tick anymore.

It's an easy thing to check, please just pull the coil and make sure. It was such a simple fix for me.

My truck has the infamous tick under 1200rpms. I haven't noticed any performance detriments, though every once in a while it won't start on the first try, and then it seems to need to turn over for another 2-3 seconds before it will fire over. Do those sound related? is it worth spending the money to replace everything, just to have it happen again?

I havent seen a single follower or adjuster issue except for people throwing shit at them. Ive seen a ton of phazers and oiling problems for the phazers.

I wouldn't replace everything unless it needed it. Ford updated the phasers a while back, they are much better but every once and while I see the newer ones making noise but nothing like the older ones.

There are a lot of things that could cause the slower start, the phasers are not likely but possible.

how do you determine if the noise is normal or in need of further inspection?

my guess is cam phasers and/or the guides. or you put too heavy viscosity oil in. change the oil and put some mobil 1 or motorcraft 5w-30 and screw in a new oil filter.
