  • V-10 for towing?

Does anyone use a V-10 for towing? I am looking to tow a 35ft 5th wheel maybe 6 times a year probably 5K miles tops. Other than that the truck will be my daily and see around 5-6K per year of daily use. Is it worth it to pay the premium for the Diesel or can the V-10 handle the job with the main downfall being worse MPG?

I am looking at an F250/350 with the V-10.

    Thanks

    If you get a v-10 get a 3v one.

You will never recover the cost of a diesel at that mileage.

If you're buying used, it may be a different argument, if you can find a decent deal. Personally, I wouldn't buy a new diesel unless I had coin to bypass everything and pay for all warranty issues that may arise.

I only know 1 person with the V10 and that's my Dad. He has 8' tall dump trailers some are 8x12, some 8x10...etc that get loaded with wet leaves, slate shingles...fairly heavy stuff and that truck pulls them fairly easy. This is on PA roads, which are mountain roads too. He pulls them nearly everyday and it's his daily.

I am looking used and the difference between V-10's and Diesels is around 10-15K(depending on brand) and I just don't drive/tow all the time so I don't want to spend the $ if it's not a necessity.

No way would I want a diesel with that much of a price difference, considering the price of fuel/maintenance/repair, and the amount of use you are looking at.

              I would look at a 2010 v-10. It's the last year ford put a v-10 in a f250/350.

So I am looking at a 2006, the add says it is the 3V you mentioned and it is a low mile truck.

Just figuring 5000 miles towing/5000 miles daily at 7mpg/12mpg (V10) and 10mpg/15mpg (diesel) and at a cost of $3.259 for gas and $4.00 for diesel, you'll save about $386 in fuel over the year with a diesel. Oil changes would be a wash (figuring 3 (gas) vs 2 (diesel). You'd end up using about 300 gallons more in the v10, but the cost largely negates this.

NOW, if you're doing a shit ton of mountains, I'd get the diesel, unless you have the tolerance to creep at 35-40mph. But down here? Probably not needed.

I have an 08' v10 F250, but I don't really tow much. Few times a year. I use payload more than anything. I'm in same boat as you as far as mileage a year. Me personally, I wouldn't get a diesel if you're not driving much here.

I'll add that at the cost ($386/yr) it'll only take you 26 years to recover the cost

DId you factor in the resale that is non-existant on the v10 with high miles?
