  • Foxbody electrical issues...

    91 coupe v8

Driving down the road, went to hit my passing lights, and the car died. Let off the lever and it started going again.

Did it 5 more times on the way home, trying to figure out wtf.

If I flip the lever forward it's fine, pull it back and it dies. Flip the headlight switch and it stumbles, for a split second then it's fine.

    Where do I start?

Got home and in my driveway it's fine, cant replicate.

3G alt and yellow top optima.

Because of the headlight switch causing an issue, I'd be inclined to think it is a grounding issue. The extra load is hunting for a solid ground and causes the car to stumble and die. It started back up because you were still in gear. I'm betting the fuel injector harness or the coil ground is getting interfered with. Maybe ignition switch or MUlti-fuckedup switch.

          Ground issue makes sense don.

I'll go give them all a check.

I probably need to add some anyways.

When I hit the highbeams it would die instantly and not stumble.

The only time it would miss a beat was when I hit the headlight switch on the dash.

What's weird is that its not doing it anymore.

You may need a new multifunction switch. I've got one way cheaper than auto supply . It's a month old

How would that cause it to die?

The radio would turn off too.. The car was losing voltage somehow.

                Short?

The multi fuckedup switch and the ignition switch can fail internally and allow current to breach into another circuit.

Electricity always follows the path of least resistance. A system with a lot of load on it (spark plug trying to pop off under compression stroke) has to have a good ground. What may be happening is that the ignition switch/coil/multi fuckedup etc. could be allowing the ignition system to ground out.

I would try the ignition switch first. I've seen it do some funky things when it goes out.

While you're into the steering column, just replace both ignition and muli-function switches. Niether one are real expensive, and they both eventually fail.

Multi switch is 105$ at Autozone.

It hasn't done it since. I'm thinking a ground issue was at fault.

                          Not real sure though.

I had a simila issue on my coupe and it was a pinched 12v supply wire to my high beams.
