  • Catalytic Codes

Alright.. we put an h pipe on Marisa's car recently, along with a JLT cold air and SCT tune.

Ever since the 2nd or 3rd drive cycle the CEL has been on. I had the codes pulled and it was for the o2 sensors. I was under the impression (and because the shop told her they/it would) that the tuner would eliminate the codes from the o2 sensors.

I have to get the car inspected and i know they won't do it with the CEL on. I need ideas on how to get this fixed asap. Thanks!

Your tune might be different but when I put an off road H-pipe with no cats on my old GT the tune just told the computer that the O2 sensors were reading ok, however if there was actually a bad O2 sensor the code would still come up. I might be way off on this though.

Do you have a handheld tuner or a chip? If handheld you should have an option to turn them off. If a custom tune I would take it back to the tuner and have them turn them off (like they said it was).

Handheld with a custom tune loaded.. I'm trying to avoid having to drive all the way out there again but will if we have to.

You should still be able to modify certain parameters on the customer tune with the handheld. Check it to confirm that the O2's are turned off.

I don't know about you, but when I have issues with my tune I just make a request to tech support at SCT. They just email me a tune for whatever changes I have made and I use Live Load Ford to upload the new tune into my XCal2. You have free lifetime tunes from Bamachips/SCT.

If you had an old Predator hand held, they actually allowed the end user to disable the MIL for the downstream 02s. The newer model SCT tuners have eliminated this end user feature to reduce liability. However, they will disable them in the tune file upon request. It took them less than 24 hours to redo all my tunes and email them back to me to disable PATS. As my PATS transceiver went out and the car wouldn't start. Instead of spending time and money on fixing the actual problem. I just sent SCT tech support a request and got a free work around PATS disabled tune(s). Did the same thing after installed my dirty dog converter. They just emailed me the new tunes that tweaked the lock up strategies and so forth. Easy as pie.

I had a Predator, which is why I was suggesting what I did, but what you say makes sense.

The first set of 02's should still be reading before the "cats" and the 2nd set should be turned off all they do is read the cats performance. On the codes are the 02's sensor 1 or Sensor 2 02 1,1 would be 02 sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1 which would be passenger side before the cat.

Don't remember the exact codes, just that it was both for o2's (assuming post cat) and then one each of the same code but in a pending state.

I'll run the car by AZ tonight and pull the codes for sure. Thanks!

Used the SCT handheld tuner to read and clear the DTC's.

                      Codes were p0420 and p0430

Why would these illuminate after having a tune thats supposed to have that turned off?

you said you recently put an h-pipe on there, have you checked for leaks or damage to the cats/02 sensors, pinched wires etc?

Aren't those codes just generic downstream cats failing?

Yes for cat efficiency, and I wouldn't rule out a catalytic converter failure, but I've had O2 problems after installing exhaust and come to find out it was a frayed O2 wire with a CEL showing a lean condition. I would go down the checklist from the easiest/cheapest fix and narrow it down from there.

No cats, it's an offroad H. My understanding was that the tune would turn those o2's off, maybe i'm mistaken.

I'll check the pipe but can't imagine how a wire would get damaged, as i checked it all post install.

If the tune doesn't have the rear o2's turned off then it's a no brainer. No cats + working o2's = fail = CEL.

If they are turned "off" per the tune, would a damaged o2 sensor or wire still cause the CEL?
