  • converting 03 cobra fuel pump/tank to return style?

so i am working on my project to convert my race car with a returnless 03 cobra pump and tank setup over to a return style setup for the coyote swap I am planning. Can I just wiring the dual pumps to run 100% all the time without the fuel pump "driver", plumbed up to a regulator in the engine bay, then plumb in a return to the tank? It's a little redneck but a hell of a lot cheaper than an early SN95 tank and new pump. Other option I have is to use a big in line pump we have sitting on the shelf but then I would have to find a cannister to replace the pumps/pick up in the tank that would work well as it does at the track. I'd also like to find a way to keep my fuel level sending unit and guage from the dash but that's icing on the cake. first goal is to get the thing running without spending a fortune.

    Thanks.

You can replace the pumps with warbro342's or bigger. Wire up the pumps with a big relay, good wire, and good fuse. Key on 12v to the pumps, you can tap into the roll over switch in the trunk to trigger the relay. Put a regulator up front with a return line into the filler neck, that will complete the redneck return setup. Works fine, nothing wrong with it. If you want a nicer setup you can get a billet hat for 4-500 depending on which one you get. Those will house 2-3 warbro 485lph pumps with an feed/return fittings, these can support well over 1krwhp on E-85. With the billet hats you would still use the stock level unit.
The stock pumps will not like running at 12v all the time and will go out eventually.

the monster pumps we have sitting on the shelf are edelbrock in line pumps that are the size of a fosters beer can. just need to figure out how to plumb a pickup that works at 1.8G cornering. i may just have to bite the bullet and put a cell in the damn thing. i may try the two 342 setup as a start and see how it works. im already using that extra fitting on the filler neck as a vent but there isnt anything stopping me from welding in some new fittings into the tank. wiring will be simple like the painless setup i put in the wifes camaro when i use the controls pack.

thanks for the info manny. my goal is to have this thing running by mid march but that includes figuring out installing an mr2 electric power steering setup that replaces the hydro-boost. not sure it will work steering and brake booster yet but should be interesting getting more weight off the nose.

Manny's info sounds like the easiest way to go about it, just add a return bung somewhere and make sure you've got good pumps. The fore products hats are a nice piece, but it's a lot of money just for a return port. If the control pack has a fuel pump control signal for the relay you'll be golden, other wise set it up for key hot or ignition power fed through a switch since it's a track car.

Do what Manny recommended, just instead order a steel bung from summit and weld it to the top of the tank for your return.
