  • hard to shift?

Ok, my older brother just finished having his motor put in and while it was out he bought a new throwout bearing from Orlly?'s.

The issue is the same as what happened to my mach 1...it started a pretty loud chirp (sounds like a shot throwout bearing) and now it is getting hard to put into gear. The more it is driven, the harder it gets, so he just parked for now and is borrowing one of my cars so he won't cause it to completely go out, whatever it is.

My question is: Is it the pilot bearing? The throwout bearing is brand new (under 1k miles on it), so I wouldn't suspect that...unless it was just a lemon.
*edit: clutch cable? His seems ok, but I could be wrong. (original '99)
    Thanks!

The noise won't be caused by the clutch cable. I've seen the pilot bearing cause hard to engage gear (sitting still from neutral to a gear), or hard shifts while moving. The noise is makes is more of a growl most of the time because the bearing being out allows the input shaft to walk around rather than hold it steady. I just replaced a clutch in a Ford half ton 4.2 this week for this. The owner thought it was the throw out bearing, which was amazing tight and smooth after 220+ thousand miles, but once I got it apart the pilot bearing had eaten all of the needle rollers.

Thanks again. I'm going to try the cable first (because it's easier obviously and is possibly the problem still) and if that doesn't work...out comes the motor.

Clutch cable or the housing the throw out bearing rides on. Commonly overlooked.

I would suggest an oem ford cable. that will cause it hard to shift if it is not properly adjusted.

This. get ready to spend a little bit more for the OEM though.

Call tousley ford and have the dealer price match parts...it saves your wallet big time. Ex: A $35 tty crank pulley bolt went down to $3.50.

Your dad called me today while I was at work, I told him everything I could get through the phone. I had asked him to bring it up there so I could see what was going on. I ordered him a cable from Denton, even though I advised against it (cheap Autozone cables).

Heard you guys got it figured out. Something with the quadrant?

Throwout bearing retainer for the chirp, penicillin for the drip.

I should have tried this first, but I tightened the clutch cable using the stock quadrant and now it works fine.

you tightened the clutch cable?? The OEM cables don't have a nut and thread at the fork like the aftermarkets... do you have a firewall adjuster or are the SN95 cables different??
