  • add a capacitor to the power lines on a msd

MSD suggest it, anyone else use one, i added one last night and it's doing work. Parallel on the power wires.

from MSD: The Noise Filter will prevent damage to the MSD during jump-starts and will keep a vehicle’s 12-volt line “clean” by removing any voltage and current surges that could interfere with the operation of some MSD accessories such as the Soft Touch Rev Control or the Two Step Module Selector. It is recommended that the Noise Filter be used on installations with the MSD 7 and 8 Series Igni*tions to prevent this interference.

    What micro-farad sized cap?!

Do you have a link to it for wiring it up?

I burnt up my MSD7AL a while back testing my shutoff switch with the car running, I didn't have the alternator output lead run to the battery side of the switch and when i shut off the switch (which just disconnected the battery at the time) it let the alternator go into over voltage without the load of the battery on the alternator. It fried my msd, my coil and the cap and rotor. I got a RMA from msd and it cost $27.50 to have it fixed. Needless to say, I thought MSD tech was kickass.

                FILTER CAPACITOR HOOKUP
A filter capacitor on the 12 volt supply is recommended in
applications where any of the following apply:
                • One or more solenoid valves are used drawing more
than 10 amps total (measure with amp meter if
                unsure).
                • The ignition system power connections are not directly
                routed to the battery.
                • The battery is trunk mounted or more than 6 feet of
wiring exists between the battery and ignition system
(total of ground and +12 volt connections).
Use a minimum 38,000 microfarad (uF) 16 volt capacitor
such as Crane P/N 9000-0014. You can also use a
                Panasonic EEG-AA1E473FGE or EEG-AA1E683FHE
capacitor with bracket MC51B3 available from Digi-Key (1-
800-344-4539). Install the capacitor across the 12 volt
supply (heavy red wire) and chassis ground in close proximity
                to the ignition system.

had a huge stereo, tv/dvd/FAST/MSD/etc etc, never had any problems with any type of eletronics dying... Your post specifically says MSD 7 and 8 boxes need that, I have Digital 6s (ie streetcar stuff)
