  • 2011+ truck 5.0 vs. Mustang 5.0?

I was going to look all over the internet and waste a ton of time looking at different forums and such but figured some of you already did that....

so, I found a practically new 2011 truck 5.0 for a great price compared to the FRPP 5.0 crate engine. I realize the intake and headers are probably different and I planned on swapping to the boss intake and swap headers for the car anyway, but what are the other key differences between the truck motor and the mustang motor? I plan on using the controls pack from ford and my current 03 cobra T56 so if the bell housing bolt pattern is the same and maybe the cams are close, I might pull the trigger on this junkyard motor for the race car.

    Thanks!

they arent showing that the longblocks are interchangeable in my system, but that doesnt mean too much. The late 90's-early 2000's 4.6's do show, so maybe there is something to it.

well, if they are different and not interchangeable, that would explain the VERY large difference in salvage pricing between the trucks and cars. The pictured used in the ad for this motor I found was actually a v6 so I can't really see the difference...and it raises questions about the accuracy of the ad but it's nearly $2300 cheaper than a crate motor plus shipping and it's only got 1000 miles on it.

Find a stock mustang intake or a BOSS 302 intake, good LTs and get an SCT tuner... they should be identical as far as hardware is concerned except for the cams, that is minor though and you can tune around a lot of that.

$3200. I've been trying to build my mod fund and not quite ready to pull the trigger just yet but found it and figured I will see them again later, just need to be ready to pounce. Do you work at LKQ by chance?

Don, cams will be in the future if I go this route. Ideally, if I can get to 500rwhp with some sort of reliability...this is the route I am going. I still haven't found out the REAL cause of some of the 5.0 failures except they suddenly go lean when on the gas for long periods of time. Might be the FRPP controls pack computer only....

still doing research but this setup would be far cheaper than a 408W or even adding stroke to my big bore and TFS 195R heads and cams.

            Thanks for looking this up.

I'm sure you've seen me post before about it, but that would be the way to go. Truck motor/harness/PCM, mustang accessories, exhaust/intake/motor mounts et.al.

I believe you are right. Biggest issue in this rules creep mess I am stuck in is that I have to sell this great running engine I have in the car now. I have way too much into it honestly but that is the game in racing. If I could sell the whole motor oil pan to intake to PCM/tune with the wiring harness for $4500, I'd sell it tomorrow. Just have to find someone that wants a serious 2V for their drag car or nitrous setup. I probably have $11k just in the motor which is stupid considering it only makes 324/338...but it does it all day long. The shop that built it for me says it would love a 150 shot.

The new truck 5.0's has cast pistons. Mustangs with the 5.0's have forged ones.
