  • Good Machine Shop (head work) in DFW?

I am picking up a Explorer upper/lower intake, and set of GT40 heads off of a 96' Explorer. I am wanting to get heads looked over, cleaned up, machined, ported, and new springs installed. I also want to get the Explorer intake ported.

Where is a good place in DFW to get this work done at a reasonable price? The closer around the Irving/Grand Prairie area the better.

I was looking at Cylinder Head International in Grand Prairie. Has anyone ever used this place?

Does DFW Mustangs/True Street/Gear Heads do machine/head/port work?

Arlington machine does good work, there is also a guy in Mansfield named Eddie (call JKS Performance for his #). True street sends theirs out to Houston I think, most shops outsource head work

For what you're going to pay you could buy a decent set of aluminum heads.

Well the GT40 heads, and intake are basically free, all I have to do is take them off the Explorer.

Trick Flow aluminum heads (ideal) - $1200+

        GT40 heads (free) + Alex's GT40 spring kit - $100

I have never had a set of heads worked on before. How much would the average machine shop charge to clean up, and port some heads? I wasnt thinking it would cost that much...

Last quote I heard on porting GT40's was $700. It depends on where you go I guess.
I'd still suggest saving your money and shopping around for something else. You can get the explorer intakes for $100 all day.

Seems like most shops don't want to mess with porting iron heads.

Im not dead set on having the heads ported, I just figured if I was gonna have a shop clean them up, and install the new spring kit that I would go ahead, and have them ported as well if it wasnt too much more money. But $700 for a port job? Yea ill pass...

Just because I am getting a free set of GT40 heads their junk huh? lol

I know that aluminum heads are better, but their a lot more expensive as well, and I dont have $1200+ to dish out for a daily driver. So if I can get a set of GT40 heads refreshed for say $400-$500ish that works for me for now.

I would just have them cleaned up and put new springs in with a valve job/seals.

Porting them is not cheap, and a good port job will be plenty expensive. Plus, you can fuck up a head pretty quick with a bad porting.

You can try cyl heads international in GP, they do a lot of heads.

I just picked up the same deal as you. I am going to go ahead and replace my cam while I am at it. The GT'40's will make a nice addition to daily driver. If you want to get the intake ported PM me and I will send you a link to a guy that does it on the corral. It's about 200.00 to get the lower ported.

I like GT40's and like them on a simple bolt on car . I do all the work on them myself so it saves me money but for an easy and cheap head they work great on a daily/weekend track car .

BTW , I have motors with TFS , AFR , Z304's and victors and yes they are way better but that doesn't mean the 40 isn't worth doing .

                          Leave them alone.

I went 12.2x on a set of stock gt40's save for valve job/springs/mill to 58cc with a cobra intake at 3150# with a AOD and stock cam.

You can make or break a car with a valve job. A REAL valve job is worth anywhere from 5-50HP depending on how bad it was to begin with.

As said above, aluminum heads are a better idea, but considering budget - stick with what you have. Porting will definitely drive you out of your budget range and into aluminum head territory.

I'd take the heads to Morgan and Sons Race engines in Grand Prarie. Get them decked, springs set, and a good valve job and you will get all you can get from those heads.

Yea I drive by Morgan & Son's all the time. They build some serious motors!
Anyone got an idea on about how much money im looking at spending to get the heads cleaned up, springs set, and a valve job?

Ill be using Alex's GT40 spring kit, and valves.
