best milage car for 2k-?

I had an 05 Focus ZX5 (4 door hatch). I don't remember that car getting better than 30MPG unless it was on long interstate trips. It was a blast to drive though really fun car and handled well. Was fun in Autocross.

I have a few cars around the 2000 range I have been saving for income tax.

1. 1996 Accord 5 speed 4c paint looks like shit, but the car is mechanically perfect 1800.00
2. 2000 subaru wagon gt one owner, also very mechanically sound. In very nice shape over than its missing the left lower side molding 2000.00
3. 00 VW Beetle TDI 5 speed paint looks like shit, but runs and drives great. 45mpg 2500.00

all three are VERY good cars, and I would drive them anywhere without worry.

The only thing that really went wrong with the TDI beetle I had, was the EGR pipes rusted and the turbo was leaking oil. My two favorite gas savers are definitely the 96-99 Saturn S series and the 96+ Cavalier/Sunfire. The SL2 will get over 35MPG.

It may be worth another shot. A lot of it depends on the previous owners....tons of the TDIs have the euro dash (all the lights are flashing, lol).
The one I had I got for 1900, and sold for 2500, but it was a royal shit pile. Dash stopped operating, door panel fell off, mysteriously leaked coolant sometimes, and the front bumper looked like it got punched in the face.
Oh and right before I sold it, I closed the hood and it locked shut and would never open again. They never got to even look under the hood. Who would buy it? Weird ass Russians apparently

Something I forgot to mention, the 2001-2005 cars were junk. They look decent, but other then that they're turds.

I'll be sure to avoid those. A friend of mine has one...it is a huge lemon. Blown head gaskets, weird tranny issues, etc etc. I guess it runs in that production era

my brother has a mark VIII, his mpg isn't good (wasn't any good before the gears either) and it's only fast for an old man car.

I hate sunfires and cavaliers lol! They are the get from point a to point b cars...no fun, no style, but good mpg. Any issues with them?

If you get the 2.2L OHV, no, not a single known issue, that engine is unkillable. They are cheap to purchase, maintain, repair, and drive. I was getting 38MPG highway with my 2.2L 5 speed coupe. It's a torquey little motor too, more power than the 1.6L Civic I have.
