  • POS 2002 Ford Expy spark plug replacement

I went to change the plugs on my mother in laws Expy today. Of course I get to the last two plugs I need to change and the threads are frigging screwed up. The number 3 plug felt really loose and had all kinds of combustion residue on the coil boot. The number 4 plug was tight just like all the others but it won't thread back in now. I'll probably need to do the number plug also. It threaded back in but the boot had the combustion residue on it too.

I did a google search and saw good reviews for the Calvan and Time-sert kits for replacing the threads. Has anyone used the Calvan or Time-sert kits? If you have one would you rent it to me?

Or has anyone used another kit or tool that works good too?

    Thanks for any info!

ive done them and have experience with them. the calvan kit is a good kit but is a bit hard to install in the mod motors. Its tough to get the install height right., There is a kit called big sert thative used and is badass but is expensive. Its a 400.00 kit.

Yeah the Big sert kit is from Time Sert. They offer two different ones. I guess the big sert is has a bigger insert than the regular one? I'll have to look at the at one.

the one ive used is rather large but works awesome. after the install you chase the insert with a tap and it cold forms the insert. you can use it over previous repairs too in my experience

I'll probably get the big sert kit. I just hate buying the kit for that much money for use on one car.
          Thanks!!

Man the car is out in Kaufman. I don't know exactly when I am going to be able to do it. Probably around Wednesday or Thursday on my days off for this coming week.

Ok I just ordered the Time Sert kit. I was going to go up to Carrolton and just buy it from Engine Tech for $414, but I found it online from Denlorstools.com for $360 and free shipping! Anyways, what all do I need to take off for this? I figure I need to get the injectors and fuel rail out of the way, but I haven't looked at it since Friday, and cannot remember if anything else is in the way.

Any tips to make this easier is greatly appreciated! I've got the shop vac ready and a small hose on an air blower for getting all the filings out of the combustion chambers.

Shit i'd just go ahead and pull the intake, its gotta be faster and easier than the rails and you will have plenty of room to work. Done several motor swaps on those and the intake is pretty easy to pull.

It didn't seem like the intake would have to be pulled. I know I'll have to atleast loosen the rails and move them up, just wasn't sure if I'd have to totally take them off. Now I can't wait till it comes in so I can get this done! LOL I'm glad my 2.3 coupe and my 5.0 hatch are not as much of a pain as these newer mod motors seem to be!

I pulled one to do a #3 that some fkn asshole jb welded the plug in. Couldn't get shit in there to bust it loose. Hell it only takes 30 minutes so so to pull and then have plenty of room, but u do it however you want.
