I'm paying close attention to this thread. I'm thinking of buying a 7.3l excursion off one of the parents at my daughter's school. The reliability and fuel economy are my main concerns. I could sure use the extra room and if it can deliver 18+mpg then I'm pretty much sold. I just know that eventually I'll have to start replacing parts since it already has near 300k!

we've had ours for 8 years now. It has never once given us one problem. I swapped a 6.0l tranny cooler into it to allow the transmission to last longer (we haul cattle and a boat with it).
CAI, a straight pipe ($40 at the local exhaust shop), and a tuner ($100) did wonders with MPG and power.
      We have achieved 24mpg driving 55mph before....usually it's 18-20 on the highway.
Great bang for the buck and NO worries.

Six position bullydog chip and 4" turbo down exhaust are the only mods. I also might add that I drive like a little bitch and try to keep it under 70.
I got a solid 18 ish going to TN calculated by hand but mine is a hair out of alignment and no tuner. I really need to get it tuned, a new steering box, and aligned. I just do not drive it that much and the trip to Memphis was only because the wifes Versa had a tire going bad when we left out that morning. I believe a tuner and align would put me in the 20's easy.

Hopefully my 95 psd 5spd cc 4x4 with 4.10 axles will put up some improved mpg numbers next year. I have a 3" downpipe and 4" exhaust, with a riff raff filter that are going on it in the next month or so.

22mpg easily. I got that in my ex cab long bed (auto tranny) with 35" tires no problem if a stayed out of it.
            what kind of CAI?
shouldnt there be oil in the oil filter? do you mean fuel filter?

my experience is that these trucks hate big tires. every 7.3 I've had has averaged 12-14 mpg but they were all 4x4 with 35s on 20" wheels and a lift. the motors are bullet proof though and I'm sure a 4x2 on factory rubber would do a great deal better

Are all you 18+ mpg claimers have a tuner?

                02 2wd crewcab, auto, 3:73, All stock 18 if under 65, 17 running 70.

Stock Cummins, auto 19-22. Need to check into a tuner for this one.

get a tuner. It will save your trans (if an auto), your wallet at the pump, and give you way more power

our 7.3 went up at least 3-4mpg overall
