  • get it checked?

long story short, we are swapping heads on a 99' DOHC 4.6
should he bring them to a machine shop to be checked out (and probably have new valve seals and seats put it in the end)? The heads being swapped on are off of his old motor that had the lower end bite the dust, but I know the motor was great besides that.

Do the job right the first time and get it refreshed even though they "appear" fine and ran fine before? Just trying to save my brother some $

    They'll be fine.

If you do anything just resurface them.

Never assume that, I have bolted heads on that were fine before only to have low compression due to the valves. At this point, always use lapping compound on the valves at minimum.

Yeah I've bolted on heads that were fine only to find out they were warped and blew a head gasket timing the motor.

yea, i have heard of that happening, but I had never heard it on a first hand account. I'll bring them by arlington machine and have them resurfaced and install new seats & guides.

Drop them at the machine shop and let them tell you what the heads need, best way to go about it in my opinion.

Motor Parts +? I have had them do machine work in the past and they are good at it. Reasonable prices too. Barry has been in business for as long as I can remember. Resurface on iron heads is like $30 and aluminum is $40.

I have done it twice now. Once a 3.8L taurus and once on a 3.8L buick.

Hell, the 3.8L ford stuff in the windstar, tauras, cougar, and t bird were common to let a head gasket go just because they felt like it there for a while. I'd always recommend having a machine shop check a set while they are off.

                        Yeah the 3.8L sucked.

Yeah I had a windstar that blew a headgasket and started smoking; which left me by the side of the road for tbe last time. Also pain in the ass to change spark plugs

I got 600 for it though from a Mexican that wanted to fix it and take her down to good ol Mexico. But it gave me less shit than my jetta... ask Kyle how many times he has towed me.
