  • rack and pinion

ok so yesterday I put struts on my car, and while it was up on jack stands I noticed a lot of play in my steering rack on the drivers side. you can move the drivers side shaft or whatever it is called in and out of the rack about an 1/2 inch and it makes a clanging noise. The passenger side does not do this. At first I thought this banging noise was an old struts since this is an 85 model gt and still had factory struts/shocks. My question is do I need to replace the rack and pinion all together or is there a part inside the thing thats repairable? I never messed with any stuff like this, so I have no idea how they work. Just thought Id ask around before assuming that the whole rack needs to be replaced.

Sometimes the outer is bad too, but if the slack is inside the boot area, inner.
