  • Wheel bearings necessary?

    2003 s-10 2wd. Going to be doing the front breaks tomorrow. New pads, turn the rotors and clean the ABS sensors (both are throwing a code). I haven't checked for any slop in the wheel while it is in the air. I will do that when I go to pull the wheels. The truck has 165000 miles on it, I have put 120000 of that on it, and they haven't been done since I bought it. Should I go ahead and plan to replace them, or inspect for wear/issues and go from there?

    I'd inspect for wear, slop, or damaged bearings. If they're fine re-pack them, or if sealed just reinstall.

      Any particular signs of wear that I am looking for? Just marred surfaces?

        For an extra $30 or $40? I'd replace them anyway just to not have to worry about them again.

          That was my initial thought. Bearings and seals are $30 total for both sides. However it is getting new spindles early next year to drop it a bit. I may end up converting to blazer spindles which have sealed hubs. I have been planning a suspension upgrade, however the constant ABS light and brake noise needs attention

            Check for brinelling, pitting, bluing, make sure all the bearings are there and spin freely.

                Got this all done this morning, took about 3 hours, with the trip to get the rotors turned. It looks like a new set of rotors will be in order when the front spindles get changed out. The right rotor was too far to be turned.

                  One more question. the primary reason I pulled the rotors was to clean and inspect the ABS/wheel speed sensors. If it was a dirty sensor(s) will those codes reset themselves or will I need to have them cleared?

                      Thats what I figured. I'vegota friend with a scanner. Hopefully cleaning the sensors and the back of the rotors will take care of the codes for erratic front speed sensors.
