  • Getting ready to take car to exhaust shop...

    Ok, so some quick cliff-notes:

I inherited this car, it was pretty much in pieces, and I've been slowly trying to get it back together...

I've got the rear end back in it, rebuilt transmission, replaced ignition solenoid, pulled all the nitrous stuff out, pulled about 2 miles of misc electrical BS out from an old alarm system, new battery, new alternator, new fan, new plugs, new wires, new rear brakes, new brake cylinders... I've got it to run, albeit takes a little warming up to where it will run on its own, but it runs, revs good, etc... It does NOT have any exhaust on it except the MAC Shorties... there is a stud missing on it and the H pipe needs a little tweaking to get it in place as well.

    So my questions are:

    1. Would there be any issue driving the car with open shorties to an exhaust shop to have them complete the work?

    2. Can any of you think of anything else I need to check before hitting the road with it to the exhaust shop?

The H pipe I have for it has the cats on it, but there is also a hole in the side of the pipe that needs to be patched. Since it's a vert, I'd like to keep the cats to help keep the smell down.

    Thanks for the help!

Expect it to be really loud. We did this in a 68 Chevelle and you should have seen the look that we got when we were in the city.

    Good Luck!

I did it once with long tubes and a low compression motor. It sucked ass. Hour and a half drive.

atleast put a h pipe on it for the drive. Even if youll just throw it away.

With shorties it could get hot I would imagine.

The trip will be less than 10 - 15 mins, 8 miles or so away... maybe that helps!

I remember driving to the muffler shop with open long tubes in my 84 SWB Chevy Truck. Motherfucker was loud and sounded like complete ass. Lol. Had to get some gas to. People were looking at me like i was crazy. Lol

Cops can fuck with ya, but only a jerk would give you a ticket if you are really on your way to the muffler shop.

I did it with longtubes and a really hot 302 in my old hatchback. Sounded just like nascar. It was a lot of fun, but only for the ~5 mile trip. Do it - I think a lot of car guys can tell this story.

Is there any truth to cool air causing the valves to warp when the motor isn't running?

I didn't have a problem when I had to drive a truck with longtubes to the muffler shop, but wasn't sure if shorties would be any different.

ive heard the rumor about burnt/warped valves from cool air coming back in, but never actually seen any proof myself. I wouldnt say imposible, but maybe not probable?

Meh, I see no issues. I've driven my dads old LWB 1500 with open shorties to the muffler shop. I also drove my 66 with open long tubes too and made sure I kept my foot in it!!

I've done it, shorties are loud as hell. I don't recommend a long drive.

Wouldn't damn near every drag car suffer from this if it were true?

It was funny driving with open headers though. Everybody just looked at you and wandered. Lol

Most of them have at least long tubes, or even some section of pipe. Plus they generally arent starting and stopping, but like I said, may not be any truth to it at all.
