My question is, how do I know if the gears and seals in the rear end I pick out will be any good?

Dodge rear ends are notoriously bad about rusting the parts that aren't oil bathed. Sitting in humid environments will make them go out pretty quickly.

Be prepaired to have a used one go out shortly as well.
