  • dual edelbrocks tuning questions

so i just picked up an old school dyers 6-71 blower set up for my 347. it came with one carb which was an edelbrock 1405 and i had an edelbrock 1406 laying around at home. from what i have read they are the same carb minus the metering rods, the power piston step up springs, and the primary jets. i have always been a holley guy so im not to sure on where to start with these guys as a base. can anybody with some experience chime in on what to change to make these the same. the edelbrock owners manual helps but it would be nice to have some first hand experience. Oh and by the way i am close to a mile above sea level. TIA

from what i have gathered i should change both primary and secondary jets to .101. maybe a little bigger on primary. get some 70x42 metering rods. orange spring for now and a high flow needle and seat kits. some of this shit is just numbers to me though so im not sure if i have been lead in the right direction.

you've got find someone that's familiar with edelbrocks. They are pretty basic and simple designed carbs knocked off of the afb carters. You can order a tuning kit that includes different metering rods, springs, jets, etc. I owned one at one time when I had a 500 on my 3.8 buick. Ended up running a holley 390 that's on it now and will go to a 450 or 570 cfm holley with the new build most likely.

Edelbrock carbs can be a pain most run extremely rich out of the box and take a bit of work to get the right combination of rods, jets and springs.

ya but id rather be rich than lean. i have read mixed reviews on them for boost apps too. some say you need to boost reference them and some dont. but if you do it is definitely not as easy to do as on a holley. for the time being i would like to use these carbs though and step out of the holley box for a little bit and learn something new. i have found that most people that dont like these carbs have never even used one and i was one of them. raised to use only holley haha

I've used both. The edelbrocks are easy to bolt on, hook up, and run with. I tried multiple rod, spring, jet, squirter combos on my buick and could never get it right. I had never personally owned a holley at this point but had been working on carbs for years. I even went as far as to call edelbrock, give them all my specs and see if they could recommend any addition tuning or parts to get me were I needed to be. I explained that my next step would be to try the holley 390, their response was to buy the holley.
