What's the story? Some people say phasers, but the f150 boards have a few that had theirs replaced and still had problems.. anyone actually taken one apart and or rebuilt one? My step moms 2v wore thru the timing chain guide at ~110k, my truck has 123k on it now and I would like to fix any potential problems before my pistons meet my valves..

Also does anyone have opinions good or bad on the livernois phaser lockout kits?

Phasers are a problem, chain guides and tensioners are also issues especially if oil change intervals are excessive and wrong viscosity is used.

I had 1 Cam Phaser go out my 05 3v. I figured since I had the front of the motor apart and the AC vacumed out to remove the passenger valve cover I would just do it all.
Cam Phasers, guides, chains and phase sensors. I still have some clicking sounds coming from the truck when at idle coasting. I have been told it is the injectors. It is not fun doing the phasers it took me 2 nites after work to get mine done at the house and about $900-$1000 in parts.

I also had a clicking sound when the vacum line to the passenger side wheel hub for the 4x4 got had a small hole causing the hub to not fully disengage.

Phases. new phases will still be noisy if the oil passage in the head is restricted as David described

It's part of the variable valve timing, but I didn't think that was an option on the 2V engines, only the 3V.

I change at 3500 and use only motor craft 5-20 and the fl820s filter. But I got the truck used maybe 65k ago so I can't speak for previous owner.

Is there anything able to be done to clean those holes out short of pulling the head? Would doing the chain guides and not the phasers be worth tearing into this thing?

ive been wanting to try rev-x on one. It works wonders on 6.0 injectors. If it can break that down, youve got a shot.

Can it be added to the oil and run thru all the oiling passages or is it necessary that the heads come off?

My 04 5.4 3v has never been over 3k on any oil change. It has had Mobil 1 syn 5w30 and motorcraft filter, on it, and minus that has been serviced by ford. My truck has had 2 sets of phasers. I still get that what sounds like a barring not properly oiled at start up, then some noisiness for about 45 seconds, then it stops. My truck has 186k, and after this year it is going to be replaced, but It still holds between half and 3/4 on the oil gauge, has the same power it did 8 almost 9 years ago. I would just replace the phasers, and change the oil and do the maintenance as scheduled. Mine will top 200k by december. And if it weren't for the fact, I want to take several long distance trips, I would hang on to it, but these new eco boost fx4s have me ready to jump into a payment again.

                            Thanks man.

what do you think about the phaser lockout kits they make? supposed to keep the retard on timing to -20* rather than the -60* the phasers are capable of.
