  • 95 Ranger dies when braking hard

My dads 95 3.0 Ranger had an issue with the inertia switch. He boss put his foot on it and pulled the plug out of it. BTW Ford really put the inertia in a terrible spot, right where you put your feet! So my Dad thought the problem was the pump, it wasn't. fixed the inertia switch (zip tie) and now we have the current issue.

When he brakes hard the truck will idle terribly until is just dies. The fuel pressure drops down when this occurs, but the voltage to the pump is fine. The FPR holds vacuum, and the fuel pressure looks fine when accelerating. The fuel filter was replaced last month, and then pump was replace at the same time.

check the pump relay under the hood my dads ranger would do the exact thing you are talking about and it was that

fill the tank and see if it still does it

there are quite a few different pumps for rangers, some have different depths for the pickup. Did he match the old with the new?
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.

The fuel pressure drops, but the voltage is fine I checked it from the plug under the cab. He replaced only the pump and sock filter, so it should be mounted in the same spot. When I pump the brakes the vacuum doesnt drop drastically, or idle go down.

I dont think it is a vacuum issue, because if the vacuum dropped the FP would actually go up, not down. The truck will run for a few seconds after stopping, it just idles very low and eventually dies. It also breaks up when you press the gas.

Have you searched for vacuum leaks yet? (shoot carb cleaner while idling)

You seem confident that it is not a leak, but you should rule it out by troubleshooting for it.

Is this on a full tank? If not it sounds like a pickup issue like Jyro mentioned.
