  • Rear main seal replacement

I've developed a small leak which I'm thinking is the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket.Any suggestions on a reasonable shop to go to for the repairs? I'm figuring I may as well both of them since they have access to both when they drop the transmission. This is on a 2001 f150 2wd v6 if that matters. Thanks in advance!

I'm sure it could be done(oil pan) with it in the truck, but step 1 in alldata for oil pan removal is remove engine.

Usually there is not enough room to remove the pan while the motor is mounted in the
vehicle. Mostly because the pickup tube requires a couple inches of oilpan drop, then
the k-member is there to prevent the drop.

For many vehicles, you could lift up the motor a couple inches with a crane(if there is
room), and gain just enough room to drop the oilpan.
Sometimes the travel is limited by the transmission and the tunnel.

Lifting the motor can take some doing too. If you lift the motor, be aware of all possible
contact points, before you break something.

Best price I've gotten is $480 out the door with a warranty on the work at Hill Tires and Service in Carrollton. They had me come by and put a dye in my oil to know exactly where the leak is coming from.

Thanks VaderTT but I don't have access to a lift or much in the way of tools anymore. I'll call around a few more places tomorrow and see if I can get a better price. First things first, I need to know for sure if it's the rear main seal or the oil pan gasket and the dye they put in should make that clear.

Sounds good only thing is that this is my only vehicle so I can't afford to get in over my head trying to do the repairs on my own.

Well that small leak is getting bigger by the day. Any chance you're close and want to make some extra money one afternoon this week?
