  • Spark Plug Tool for 5.4 l 3valve motors

Does anyone have one they can loan me before I buy one?

This is the tool needed to remove the 2-piece spark plug once it breaks.

Isn't that shit fun? Why always is it a back plug...or is it just my luck. The tool set we got at work was $100 and works great.

Summit has the Lisle tool for $79. I am replacing these plugs with a one piece design so that I never have to worry about this again. The E3 diamond fire plugs are cheaper than the motorcrafts, one piece, and are getting good reviews from everybody on the F150 boards. So if I buy the tool I will be selling it as soon as the job is done.

I've yet to invest in the tool or spark plug socket, been trying to avoid messin with these. At the same time I hate to turn away Labor/money. What are yall getting for extra time on each plug that breaks. I guess I need to invest in these for my toolbox and wallet. Have you had any trouble with the shell going into the cylinder/ any potential risks of damage in doing this job.

When I am done with the job I will sell you the tool if you want it. I just ordered it brand new and hopefully (yea right) I will not need to use it.

Clock hours, keep in mind its not a "sure" fix, if that mofo goes into the cylinder= head removal. I was really worried about that but i put some shit behind it when cutting the threads for the tool to grab.
There was a discussion over at the canada site about these, PM greenbullit, he's got some good tips on how not to break them off.

Do you follow the TSB exactly? Greenbullit mentioned he used a 3/8" air ratchet.... but everywhere i read (especially the TSB) heavily warns not to do this. Ive read a lot about doing this on F150 forums and never heard of anyone needing to remove the cylinder head?

Yea pretty much, ive broken 3 off requiring extraction. So far i got all out. In the instructions that comes with the tool it pretty much says its not a sure fix for getting the broken piece out. It IS possible for it to fall into the cylinder. Ive heard of that happening. First one i broke, i didn't know about the problem and was like.....oh fuck me<-----exact words.
From what i remember he uses a 3/8 snap on air IMPACT ratchet, haven't tried it myself tho i don't own one of those wrenches.
What ive done is let the motor cool all the way down, squirt a shitload of penetrating oil and work the plug a little back and forth. Last few ive done haven't broke any off.
Did you read the TSB? I can get it off Alldata if you haven't and would like to check it out.

I have not seen the entire TSB just bits and pieces people have mentioned in forums. Do you mind sending that to me? That would be great.
