  • P302 in a 07 GT

2007 24V 4.6L GT - only mods are LT, mid, catback, and a tune to increase the transport delay so the rear 02's won't trip. No problems with the car in the last 2 years since it was modded / tuned.

First experience with a misfiring cylinder so I could use some advice.

So the other day my GT started up an sounded a little rough, as I was idling down the alley on my way to work it started surging as I started to brake at the end of the alley then died. Restarted it and it popped a p302.

Tried swapping plugs and driving - p302 again
Tried swapping the cop - p302 again

Took it to a general mechanic shop that normally has done right by me and gotten routine stuff fixed right. They hooked up to the diag machines and says they eliminated to ignition system as the culprit. Claim it was gunk in the valves / cylinders. Say they ran cleaned through it and could see the misfire counter going down. Supposedly one of the mechanics drove it from the shop here in Wylie out to Farmersville and back with no issues.

I on the other hand make it barely the mile and a half back to the house before - p302.

Might as well have just burned the cash it cost me to have them look at it for all the good it did.

Should I just clear the code and drive it a couple of cycles to finish burning out the crud? I don't want to have to replace a cat or have a fire on top of everything else. Or should I just drive it over to one of the Mustang shops to have them look at it, because the next step according to the paper work they gave me would have been for them to pull the head, and if that's what's next I want someone who knows mustangs doing it.

And which shop to take it to? Was thinking about TSM since they seem to be getting good feedback.

Someone was blowing some serious smoke up your ass.

Good people over at true street, so no worries from those guys.

It can be not getting fuel, not getting spark or not holding compression.

I'd suspect a fuel issue, injector, because you swapped the coil and it still showed p0302. Swap an injector and see if the code changes. If it doesn't there may be a vacuum leak effecting that cylinder, which I think would be unlikely since you're not throwing a lean code on that bank.

if you clean all that shit off the valves you think it might have fouled out the plug after driving it if they didnt already change it afterwards?

Had to drive it to work last night. Light has gone off and hopefully stays off this time. But its still surging after cold starts and dying at low speeds sometimes.

Also it doesn't feel as smooth accelerating anymore and I could swear the exhaust note has a different sound in it when accelerating too. Would that be due to the cleaner they used?

As long as it doesn't burst into flames I am planning on going by TSM friday morning after I get off work for a expert opinion.

If they fouled a plug or 3 with the cleaner, then yeah, it would cause those problems.
