  • Turbo Question

I picked up a 3000gt VR4 Twin Turbo car this weekend. I plan to rebuild or replace the engine with a reman longblock as it has a spun rod bearing which is pretty common on these.

The stock turbos are TD04 9b units. The stock fuel system/computer etc can handle up to TD04 or TD05 15t's at around 15lbs of boost. At that point the injectors are at 100%.

I know only enough about turbos to get myself into trouble..So my question is this:
I have found a company who sells turbo upgrade kits for the car. The kit includes a compressor housing and compressor wheel to make them 15t's. It does not change the exhaust housing or wheel. Will this work?
They also have a kit with a compressor housing and compressor wheel/exhaust wheel pre-mounted on the center section. Still no exhaust housing. Better?
What effect could this have on the power band of the engine?

I would think that if you increase the pitch and size on the compressor wheel but not the exhaust side it will take a lot more RPM to make boost. Correct?
However increasing the size/pitch of the compressor and the pitch of the exhaust woudl work better.

Am I correct in my thinking?

I browsed around a little and didn't see a lot of recent activity. I figured it was not used as much as this site.
I will check them out a little closer.

And further, your question is not that simple. You need to do some research and learn about turbo maps, AR ratios, etc, and have realistic goals and a budget to support those goals. Quick hp gains on turbo cars get expensive fast. There is no such thing as unlimited anything.

Often on here you will see "cheap, fast, or reliable" - you can only pick 2.

Turbo car owner since '99, and I was "old and wise" by then, according to most.

This. They know their shit on the DSMs and imports. They helped me solve my boost creep problem years ago when I put a Big 16G on my SRT-4.
