    Pulling factory tint off

    My wife, who's normally great about keeping the car cleaned inside & out, let the kids wreck the rear windows with stickers & such. For some reason, she thought using a razor blade would work well to clean a particular spot, and wound up cutting a piece out of the tint.

    She wants to get them re-tinted, and the front to match, but the tint shops are saying the'll just tint over the factory tint, "that it can't be removed". She's already demonstrated that it can be removed.

    Should I let them tint over it, or go through some pain staking process to clean the old tint off?

    What are the steps to remove old tint?

    If she already cut a hole in the factory tint, then tenting over them will yield a light spot where the hole is and look like crap IMO...

    Use a razor blade and a lot of elbow grease. May try some lighter fluid or other adhesive remover as well...

      Razor blade and walmart used to carry tint remover but I've used everything from laquer thinner to goo gone to remove the glue.

          "Factory tint" is in the glass itself. Any adhesive film applied to the glass is not from the factory. Soapy water and razor blade. Get after it.

            Winner. It may be dealer applied tint, but it's aftermarket if she cut a piece of it out. You should be able to remove it.

                If you have a steamer you can remove that tint in one sheet no shit left on the glass. Takes all of 10 minutes.

                  I just did this on my Explorer's front windows so I could get it inspected. Removing the glue is a pain in the ass. Spray adhesive remover a razor blade. Took about 30 minutes per window.

                    Also there is another trick which I vaguely remember involving using a trashbag against the glass with (I think) just water sprayed on it? Anyone recall how to do this.

                      wet the bag, tape it to the inside of the window, park it in the sun. Basically TRIES to do the same thing as a steamer.

                      Steamer is the way to go hands down. F*ck scraping that shit.

                        Yes the trash bag trick works really well during the summer months, use black trash bags. Cut down the sides to make one big wide sheet and use some dish soap and water in a spray bottle, spray window and then lay trash bag on top of that. Also try to get most of the air pockets out. One last thing if the window has a defroster on it do not use a razor blade it will damage it. Use light gauge steel wool and windex to get the remaining glue off the glass.

                            ive always been able to peel a corner up after it sat outside all day and pull the tint of in one piece. pull it all off and then windex and a razor blade and glue comes right off

                              Did this years ago and it works great. Just spray the hell out of the tint with soapy water and stick the bag to it and let it sit in the sun for a few hours then razor blade and elbow grease.

                              I just removed the tint on my suburbans front windows because they wouldnt pass inspection and I lucked out. Started a corner with a razor blade and was able to get it off in one sheet with no steam or trash bag trick. I guess it was cheap tint but it looks good.
