  • Is my starter dead?

Just got up, tried to go to work but when I turn it over I just get a ticking noise? It's not the battery, power everywhere is still fine car just won't turn over.

    Two Questions:

    1) Does this sound like the starter?

    2) Is this hard to replace? I've neve done it and I'd like to get to work sometime today if possible!

    Thanks

Starter, solenoid, or could just be a bad ground.

      OK!

Well I played with it a bit and it might be my alternator. When I just turn the key on(not starting) everything flickers??
My battery is just a year old so I'm not sure if that would cause it either?

Alright, just tested the battery. While off it's reading 11.8V when I turn the car on(not started) it drops to 8.6V!

Is that the battery or the alternator? I cleaned the connections and they looked good

battery, the alternator does nothing unless it is spining.

                ^ What he said.

Also after new battery is put make sure and have your alternator and make sure it's charging and the diode pattern is good.

Battery age doesn't mean anything. Kind of the same as saying I can't be broke, I had $1,000 in my checking account last week.

Yep, took my battery to O'Reileys where I got it. They tested it and said it had a bad cell, was less than a year old too. It was really the last thing I thought was the issue. Got a new one with my warranty so overall not as bad as I was expecting.

                    Thanks for the help guys!
