Mike Im with them bud... go find you another motor to put in there if you are not wanting to yank it and rebuild it. The $175 that you were quoted for a new head is worth it considering the miles and wear and tear you will save your coupe in the long road with a daily driver.

Oh and don't short cut anything just to get it running... the consequences of that decision will end up in you spending money to keep it on the road instead of your coupe.

I think you answered your own question......

Just because it's not smoking out the exhaust doesn't mean you don't have blowby. Did you pull the breather and see if it was puffing out of it?
Plus as fubared as that cyl was it probably wasn't firing

If you ran it with water in the oil, the bearings are trash. It doesn't take long to ruin them. Good luck though. You'll learn, with time, not to shortcut any of your work.

I didnt do any of this, picked it up for free and drove it 1 mile to my house and parked it.

If I return the headgasket set and was bolts I'll get about 130$ back, might as well fork over another 170$ and drop in another engine.

Scrap the old engine, get x$ dollars back.

I'll be at my under $300 limit to fix this thing..

You just said you drove it, then it ran, right? Just saying.

It ran when I drove it to my house. Barely, wouldnt go over 2500rpm, has no power, was really slow at cranking over.. But it did "run"..

I'm gonna throw another motor in it, and call it a day.

Sucks because it only has 70k miles, and the motor I found has 120xxx..

Good call on that. It probably wouldn't rev or run right because of the excessive "fluids" in the engine. Overfilling it with anything tends to lug it down.

                      Good luck!

Dude plenty of people have done patch jobs like that for a long time. If I'm in a shop no way I fix that but for a free car clean out the big stuff put some new gaskets and bolts in it and change the oil a few times. If the bearings aren't already trashed it will run for awhile and if it fails you'll get your money back from a scrap yard. I wouldn't waste the money on another suspect motor and damn sure wouldn't waste the money on a rebuilt motor for an old piece of shit. And the running rough is probably because the cat is clogged from miss firing

That's one hell of a milkshake. Someone was running that motor for a long time, the bearings are fried. With the rust on the head, the crack between the valves, the motor is toast. No sense in wasting money on the gaskets.

It has open manifolds right now because the turd cut the cats off. This thing is acually in very good shape or I wouldn't have even picked it up. The interior is perfect and everything still works. The junkyard motor has a 30 day warranty and I'll be installing it that day and hopefully be done by that night. If I can get it to run and last not only will I have a daily driver to park my coupe, but I will have some bartering leverage to trade to for a civic or just sell it for 1500-2000$ which will put me at over 1,000$ profit at the very least. For $300 for the scrap engine it's a gamble I can still recover from by sending it to a scrap yard and breaking even. It's just labor at this time, it's a breeze to work on and I find it to be somewhat fun and sure is better then sitting on the damn couch..

I personally think the engine in it will still run for a while, but I also see that spending 300$ on gaskets, bolts, machine work ect just to have the possibility of spinning a bearing, having the overheating problem come back and ruin everything just isn't the BEST way to go about fixing the issue. I put myself on a $300-$400 budget to fix this POS, and for a known running engine to swap in.. Just seems more plausible then the gamble that is currently in there right now.
