I just recently got my '02 explorer back up and running since going through the same situation. I bit the bullet and bought a reman long block from AER, since they are the ones who do all the re-manufacturing of engines for Ford. I debated doing the LKQ thing but they're prices are outrageous for something that is in an unknown condition. Too much of a gamble for me. I believe mine came with a 3yr/36k mile warranty. Only has about 50 miles on it so far but so far so good. No issues.

Looking for an LX front bumper cover in the best shape possible. Hit me up if you can help.

X2 I don't see spending $800 on an engine on a car that will bring 1,500-2,000 in a good market. I really don't see how that's a justified price personally, they're were a ton made and to see an 5.3 ls engine go for around the same price doesn't make much sense to me, I almost felt like calling and asking who set the prices there because theyre obviously fucking delusional.

I have a one, it's got some pitting in the trim and some turd primered it. It has 1 small tear in a spot that is under the hood and with the right anount of patience it will be just fine.

Pm your number and I'll send some pictures. I found one in near perfect condition that mark preus will be painting this weekend. !! Woot !!

Ive done Alot of heads gaskets with same problem an i just pour some motor flush down oil fill with oil plug out put new oil an,filter drive it around awhile change it again an should be fine. But if your exporer has same engine as a 98 ford exporer then u might aswel junk it. Cause their pain to set timing an have to pull motor to do it due to having chain also in back of,motor. I yanked the heads today and the driver side had one blown ring, cylinder was rusty from water, and the combustion chamber is rusty like a mofo..

The rest of the cylinders looked pretty good though, so I poured fresh oil through the cam/lifter valley and wd-40 the cyl walls and poured ATF in the rusty cylinder and oil in the rest, jumped the starter solenoid and watched the pistons do a few cycles, and repeated until the rust was gone and it felt smooth.. That was probably a bad idea but it sure as hell looked cool. Lol!

Also let the nasty oil spin out and I kept pouring fresh oil over the cam..

I'll post pictures in a second.

One would bad cylinder cause it to run like total doo doo? It wouldn't rev past 2500rpm and was really slow and cranking..

Was that just water In the oil?

Stupid question but... Can the head be soda blasted and cleaned up?

Would it be a waste to go to a Machine shop and have it tested?

                        Being frugal is annoying!

rust more than the water. youd better take that head to the shop if youre still thinking about fixing it. be ready to buy one.
