  • QUestion about the 2.3L

Alright so heres the deal. Are there any difference in the 2.3L starting with the dual plug? Cause this new head i got seems to have different mounting bracket holes. and it seems m other valve cover gasket wont work and when i started the truck, it spit oil right behind the cam gear throwing oil everywhere. Just wandering if there was a difference throughout the years of the 2.3L.

They changed it up for the dual plug, so it stands to reason that there are differences in the accessories too. if there's any passages that are shooting pressurized oil, you need to make sure you have a plug in there!

Well its not a bad leak, it just drips onto the cam gear and that spinning throws oil everywhere. Would there be a difference in valve cover gaskets?

Did you use teflon tape on the bolt that holds the cam gear onto the cam?

No i did not, looks like the oil is coming from the front of the valve cover. Which is why im asking if there is any difference in the years in that region. Its the only thing stopping me from letting this thing run.

The camshaft is pressurized with oil and it will leak if you did not put tape on it. Just back it out and tape it up to see if it still leaks.

Alright, will try when i go home. The reason i asked about the valve cover gasket cause it doesnt really line up right unless you just make it line up...

I forgot about the teflon on the cam bolt, what valve cover gasket are you using? If its cork or the crappy blue one junk them and buy a single metal reinforced one

I use silicone on the cam gear bolt and a newer ranger valve cover gasket that has metal in the rubber and don't have any problems

hard to tell, but that last pick looks like the seals outer lip is bent in/flat...... NEVERMIND, in looking at the first pic I'd say there is not camshaft seal there. Always double check to make sure your head has the cam seal installed when you get them back from machine shop.

Well it runs. But idk if its running right, I figured the cat was clogged up so the exhaust is off in this video. The idle is turned up so it idles betters. It really hasnt ran since 09. So it might just need to be ran hard for a bit. Heres a video and see if yall can hear any dead cylinders or something.
