  • Question about timing a 2.3 dual

Well I got a new head for my ranger and I knew how to time it. The old head was cracked but on the cam gear had a lil arrow showing where to line it up. But this new head cam gear doesn't have any sign of an arrow on it. Question is how do I know where it's in time or not with no arrow?

Can you not just swap the cam gears

i have a few extra cam gears if you need one it's yours for free, but you'd have to come get it in Denton.

I just don't understand why this one doesn't have a mark...

Turn the cam until the valves for number one are closed. There should be a mark in about the 5 o'clock position of the cam gear.

Hold up, found some marks, but there's a diamond and a triangle. And a lil indenting mark. Which one do I go by?

IIRC, it will be the indention. It will be the same as the mark on the crank shaft.

Did you remove your head before setting the number 1 cylinder to TDC?

That dot is what your timing mark should look like.

Yes, I said the machine shop has the original head cause it was cracked. Motor was on TDC before I pulled the head. This new head with the cam and can gear doesn't have the not h like yours shows to have. My old head had that. This. We one doesn't.

                              Doh!

It's the triangle. I just googled images for 1993 ford 2.3 cam timing mark and finally found one that shows the triangle. And it's listed for a Ranger.
