Talked to ShaunT & he suggested that I put a 195 Thermostat in it & run a Wix 51515R filter because it's a high flowing race filter with RP or Amsoil & change it after 500 miles & repeat process for next 3000 miles

But right at first he said run that AC Delco Top Engine Cleaner through the Motor & let it suck up 3/4 of the can & then once it almost out let the motor suck the 1/4 of the can up till it stalls out & dies & let it soak for about 30 mins & then run it & it should smoke really bad & then change the Oil right after & then do what he said above.

Gonna try this & see what happens. But man this car is making me pay for it now

Switching to a synthetic oil will slowly dissolve the gunk where you wont have to worry about it clogging anything up, and running the cleaner through a vacuum port wont do a thing for the oil gunk. What u dont want to do is loosen all of it up at once, but if u do it gradually with some synthetic oil changes youll be alright

I agree with you on the Synthetic & not loosing it all up at once considering its going to clog up the Oil Pick up, It runs damn good. Its holds great oil pressure! Just all that sludge look terrbile. I have the rockers sitting in some Coke & plugged up all the Pushrods holes & scaping it all off the top of the heads! Hell the Rockers & pushrods have oil COOKED on there. The Valve covers where cooked too. Im turning those over & pouring Coke in there too to losen that shit up. But I bet it pulls alot better with all that shit off the Valvetrain & the oil looked new when I checked it, Go Figure!!!

Seb, the engine that I am rebuilding for my coupe had some buildup like yours but not as bad. I used a gallon can of Berrymans cleaner from Walmart to soak the rockers, pushrods, valvesprings, etc. in after scraping off what I could. Everything cleaned up very well. I bought a second can of the Berrymans and used it to clean all of the parts a second time. That fluid is still clean. It was a lot of work to clean the parts up but it was time well spent.

The oil pan on my engine had minimal crud in it. Everything was on top.

I don't know whether or not the synthetic oil will help dissolve that stuff or not but I wouldn't use any cleaner that is going to knock all of that stuff loose. I wouldn't even try scraping much of that without taking the heads off to prevent the loose stuff from going into moving parts.

          Good luck with your project.

Yes it was but it had a couple of owners in between Clint and Sebastian.

Why not just stick a cheap stock longblock in it? Its not like would cost very much and would make for a reliable, clean cruiser.

I was thinking about either scraping all the old gunked up oil off the top of the heads & cleaning the Pushrods & installing my 1.7 RR. But no point in doing that if the rest of the motor looks like this. Im afraid to see the oil pan
Oh the rest of the motor is probably just as bad, but if you take the heads off, you will be able to get at the lifter valley as well. Much better shot of getting the gunk out. The more that you can get out before thinning it, the better chance the motor has of surviving.

Fords can practically run with out oil.
                  If I remeber correctly,
There was this thread about it 24hr lemans and ford and the superior oiling system.
                  Anyways
I have torn down a few motors that had the same issue with the oil gunked up as you mentioned. The bearings looked new.
Most likely the head gasket had a real mild leak and or the intake.
I would bet you will be fine.
As stated use a wix filter and run some Rislone threw it then tear it down for the head swap.
                  Good luck.

Changing oil is against my religion.

Of course I changed the oil silly.....

You are correct Steve, but that kind of build up takes some time. I sold the car to a guy named William, couple months later he sold it to someone else....

Here is what i know about this car, a good friend called me and told me a friend of his had a coupe he wanted to sell. The car had been sitting for 5 years at his parents home. His parents house had be foreclosed on and he had to sell the car since he had no place for it. I took my trailer and a battery to pick up the car. It was covered in 2" of dust. First thing I did was put a battery in it and it started right up and ran like a champ. I loaded it on the trailer and took it to the shop. Put plugs, waterpump, griffin radiator, black magic fan, and a OIL CHANGE. Had the car for about 3 months and sold it since I was not able to drive it very much. End of my history with the car.... I never took the car apart, car was a strong runner and had no reason to take the motor apart to inspect.

Hate to see this kind of neglect SEB. Let me know if I can help

Also the car did have a 160 Thermostat. I have a 195 going in & hope this doesnt hurt the car with Cooling with the AC or hurt it with overheating

For now since the car ran good as Clint had mentioned im going to clean it all out off the top of the heads & I have the Rockers & Pushrods sitting in Coke & flipped the Valve Covers over & Filled them with Coke & put it back together. Car isnt broken. Just had alot of Sludge, I just dont want to try & clean the motor & end up breaking the motor by clogging it up with the sludge that does break down & it get jammed up in the Pick up tube.

Im shopping for a Set of GT40X Pedelstal Mount Heads for it & gonna take it to TrueStreet & let them boys do what they do to it!

I had one that looked about the same in a 90 GT and it ran great for years. Just clean it up best you can and keep the oil changed, it isn't the end of the world.

the 195* thermo will probably cool even better as the 160 was probably cycling water constantly giving it no time to cool off in the radiator. with the 195 i am willing to be the car will actually be less likely to overheat and get better gas mileage. just my 2 cents.
