  • Anyone have a MSD distributor go bad?

I am running the 8360 Ready to run distributor on my 69 Camaro. I have developed a miss that is really prevalent in the 2-3K rpm range. (thought it does it thru out)

Plug wires have been replace, plugs, carb, re-routed the power wire straight to the battery and still no change. Had a friend that is a mechanic drive it and he said it was in the ignition system some where. ( he is damn good at what he does) I have checked wires and have dropped close to $1k trying to figure out what is wrong with my car.

Just wondering if anyone has had similar troubles? The distributor and blaster II coil are the only things in the equation that have not been replaced.

It's the only thing in my system that hasn't been replaced, although the pickup was replaced for diagnostics. It was wiring and/or the second MSD6. So far, I'd had been much better off to leave the stock Ford stuff in.

      3rd MSD6
3rd MSD coil (and it needs to be replaced)

I don't think my 65 F100 likes MSD stuff. Most of the people I know seem to have no problem with MSD stuff.

Interesting. This has run good for years. Not sure what is going on.

That seems to be most people's luck with their stuff.

Go to MSD's website and post on their forum with your issues and a tech will respond.

I did and they fixed my 7 yr old 6AL for free (under warranty which ran out 6 yrs ago) and they also gave me a free coil because the one I had quit working. I never even asked for this they just offered it.

They have great customer service and the tech on the forum is very helpful.

                ^^ Sound advice

I just installed a complete system in a '66 that included MSD 6 box, pro billet distributor, and blaster coil, also a complete custom under-hood harness. I had issues with it right out of the box, brand friggn' new stuff, that turned out to be a bad pickup. I guess the good part is it was a free fix and I learned how to thoroughly dignose their systems.

No problems since, and it performs better than expected. So even with the trouble I am still very satisfied with their product. I've heard a few horror stories of replacing components multiple times, but I'm inclined to believe it's an installation problem or like stated above, it's just the wrong setup for the vehicle and the car "doesn't like it". Their stuff is finicky no doubt, but it is the best performing ignition out there IMO.

throw a stock hei in it and see what happens

just to make sure it's the dist.
read the ohms to the pickup, 500-700 ohms.
Don't worry about what you can't change.
Do the best you can with what you have.
Be honest, even if it hurts.

Distributor is good. It's the carb. Must be some trash in the primary metering block. Threw the new carb on and it went away.

Ethanol kills carbs all the time. I swear I am cleaning trash out of mine every time I turn around. It is always small pieces of black rubber (pump diaphrams).
